When it comes to boating in the Northeast, nothing quite compares to New York's vast inland and coastal waterways. The Empire State boats some of the most diverse boating opportunities in North American, whether it's offshore fishing off of Montauk, sailing in the Hudson, or trout fishing in the Adirondacks, there's always a reason to get on the water. The National Boat Owners Association (NBOA) - a leader in NC boat and yacht insurance - wants to remind you that when purchasing or insuring your boat in New Your, please consider that NY boat insurance is different from insurance in other states for a variety of reasons.
- Hurricanes and other named windstorms, although less common than in other southern states, do occur in New York (Sandy, for instance). Be sure your vessel is protected from both hurricanes and Nor'easters.
- A separate windstorm deductible may apply in the event your vessel is damaged in a hurricane or named windstorm.
- During the hurricane months (Jun 1st -Nov 1st) you may not be permitted to navigate into FL or the Bahamas. An endorsement can usually be purchased at an additional cost.
- Ice and freezing damage is a big concern in the area, especially in the northern and inland parts of the state. Check your policy to make sure damage from this peril is covered.
- In some cases, damage from ice and freezing may be excluded if your vessel is not properly winterized
- Some carriers put an age minimum on insuring a boat. Older vessels may require an out-of-water survey.
- A credit may apply for boats with a longer lay-up period (when the boat is stored for the winter).
- Be sure to check your navigation limits. Some policies restrict boating to inland lakes and rivers only, while others may restrict your navigation only to the Long Island Sound. If you plan to travel outside this area, check your policy before you set out. Navigation extensions can be added to suit your needs.
- Sailboat owners receive credit because sailboats are not as hazardous as speed boats.
- A separate deductible may be required for a sailboat mast, especially if the mast is carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is lighter and stronger, but in the case of an accident it usually must be replaced completely.
- Some carriers will not insure catamarans because if they capsize, they cannot be easily righted, like a sailboat.
- An auxiliary motor in case of emergencies may be required or given a credit when rating sailboats.
- Navigation limits may be all along the Eastern Seaboard, or there may be north/south latitude limits. Read your policy carefully so you are aware of your limits.
- For ski boats, be sure waterskiing is not an excluded coverage on your policy.
- Most carriers use a separate windstorm deductible in the event a boat is damaged during a named windstorm.
- Insurers may want more information on where the vessel is kept and who is watching your vessel in the case you are an absentee owner (reside in a state other than New York).
